Nicholas Dyson
Since relocating to Ottawa, Ontario in
2008, Nicholas Dyson has been one of the
busiest trumpeters in Canada’s Capital region. He's played lead trumpet with
a variety of groups like the National Arts Centre Orchestra Pops, latin-jazz
band Los Gringos, Impressions In Jazz Orchestra and musical theatre shows
such as A Chorus Line, The Producers and The Sound of Music. Nicholas was
also a featured soloist with Ottawa Superband for their Tribute to Maynard
Ferguson concerts. Other performances include Gladys Knight, The
Temptations, Solomon Douglas Swingtet, People Project, SoulJazz Orchestra,
and That’s The Spirit.
Nicholas has also been actively recording, contributing to albums by Solomon
Douglas Swingtet, The Yohawks, That’s The Spirit and SoulJazz Orchestra,
plus a live concert recording for Radio Canada with Los Gringos. Nicholas is
fortunate to appear often as a guest lecturer, clinician and soloist with
Junior High through University jazz ensembles, combos and trumpet studios
across Canada and the United States.
In Ottawa, in addition to maintaining a busy private trumpet studio and
teaching at Alcorn Music Studios, Nicholas is also the director of the
Capital Youth Jazz Orchestra. CYJO is an educationally driven jazz big band,
made up primarily of students from area universities that made their debut
in April 2009, sharing a concert with Christine Jensen and her trio.
Nicholas is pleased to join the faculty of Carleton University Jazz Camp for
our inaugural camp August 2010. Nicholas is also proud to be the Director of
the Senior Jazz Ensemble at Ottawa's esteemed 'arts centric' Canterbury High
School. Prior to moving to Ottawa, Nicholas spent a number of years as
Musical Director on various cruise liners all over the world. Some other
performances in and around his ship schedule were Natalie Cole, The Moody
Blues, Deborah Gibson, Richie Cole’s Alto Madness Orchestra, The Coasters,
The Drifters and The Platters.
